Blood sacrifice for sins is a strange notion to most of us in the western world but all across India, villagers are familiar with the shedding of blood as a means of cleansing from sin and invoking the blessings of the gods.
This is precisely why the light of the gospel shines so brightly in their hearts as they watch our all-Indian acted Life of Christ motion picture. Suddenly as they behold the crucifixion, they see how God loves them, because He gave his only son to die — to shed his blood — for their sins and for their salvation. They understand the reality and the saving power of Jesus Christ.
Can you imagine the joy they feel as they realize Jesus died in their place, and through His blood they have forgiveness? Through His blood all the strengths of Jesus became their strengths. He is now their defense and protector.
What an awesome sight to see those who have worshipped idols (false substitutes for the living God) turn to serve the Creator God as they realize it is not the shedding of the blood of pigs and goats, but Jesus’ blood, which can save them.
God has given us everything in Jesus — His righteousness, love, joy, peace, kindness, forgiveness, longsuffering, goodness, self-control, everything.
No longer do people have to cut themselves and exchange their blood to seal the covenant; no longer do the people have to substitute the sacrifice of animal’s blood. A New Covenant has been made once and for all! Think of it, we are blood brothers with Christ (Hebrews 9:18-20).
Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, “THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU.”
Blood sacrifice is a hideous practice when offered to idols who can give nothing in return. But, the sacrifice Jesus made is a glorious and beautiful thing to behold – behold the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world! “What can wash away my sin – nothing but the blood of Jesus – oh, how precious is that blood that makes me white as snow …”
