Why would an educated man like Paul, a citizen of the Roman Empire, sit still for this kind of treatment? Only one thing gave him the will and the strength to endure, as he wrote himself:

“I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16).
